Brits fear a new Oxycontin (aka hillbilly heroin) epidemic in the wake of police having seized 75,000 pounds worth of Oxycontin in Belfast and Comer in late August of this year. The first Oxycontin related death in Britain was in 2002, sourced from America. The recently seized shipment of OxyContin has been imported from India
The first confirmed British victim of Oxycontin, in 2002, was a happy teen with everything to live for, took 7 Oxy’s at a party – and was found dead by her friends next morning. That the death was Oxycontin related was reported by the coroner, six months after the death in Britain, when Oxy tablets had then been available in the UK and Ireland, distributed by Napp Pharmaceuticals, of Cambridge, for about a year. The victim’s mother, from the depths of her grief said that – every parent should be aware of this drug.
Unfortunately, since 2002 in Britain, and in the USA, ( where hillbilly heroin, also known as Oxy, has been marketed since early 1996 ), and in many other countries, including Canada – there are far too many parents, all too aware of OxyContin’s addictive and lethal potential .
In “hillbilly” States such as Kentucky and Virginia - up to 40% of the adult populations are addicted to Ox – and 80% of crimes in these States are related to the use and acquisition of OxyContin.
The Southern Highlands of the USA represents poverty, and all that is anathema to the “American Dream”. Whilst individual States in the region have tried very hard in recent years to throw off the stereotype “hillbilly” image - the “hillbilly” States are now damaged for all time by endemic oxy addiction and the tag – “hillbilly heroin” addicts.
And OxyContin is far from being a problem only for the American people of the Appalachian mountains.
Throughout North America, there has been an increasing ground swell of opinion by people affected by Oxycontin deaths and concerned others who want to see OxyContin removed from the pharmaceutical drug market.

What is not made entirely clear from official statements that have been made about addiction to Oxycontin is that at prescription doses, and when taken strictly in accordance with doctor’s orders – OxyContin is addictive.
Official reference is routinely made to the perils of OxyContin - but only in the context of diversion from “legitimate” medical use, to the illicit drug market, as a recreational drug.
Certainly Oxycontin is dangerous when abused – what however is glossed over is the fact that people using Oxy, under doctor’s orders, and at prescription doses – have, and will continue to become inadvertently addicted.
It is easy to scapegoat hillbillies and foolish drug using teens for what is in fact an abuse of public trust in the field of healthcare and management, not only in America, but where ever Oxycontin is used in the name of modern day medicine and drug based pain relief.
It has been known for centuries that opioids are an effective painkiller - that is beyond dispute. However, the downside is that chronic opioid use, knocks the body around.
Few people realize the near-death experience that opioid use can be. Oxycodone, the active ingredient of Oxycontin has a Narrow Therapeutic Index. What this means in real terms is that there is little difference between the dose that is prescribed for medication and a lethal dose. In an opioid naive patient – the maximum “safe” dose is 40mg per day.
Oxy used to be supplied as a 160mg tablet – until related deaths forced it to be removed from the market.
